There is a website that has been set up to save the Shea stadium home run apple. If you care about saving this amazin' memoribilia for the new stadium, go to this website and sign the petition.

I signed it....# 652.

Important to preserve this piece of the old Shea. The owners want to put a new hi-tech apple in the stadium.

i think the mets are getting rid of the apple due to the sexual overtones some have found.

Sexual overtones?? From an apple? You working on a new comedy act?
4th-Aug-2007 09:55 pm (UTC) - How about them apples??
What about a pear?? Pear...remember him??
4th-Aug-2007 10:11 pm (UTC) - Re: How about them apples??
if it was a banana maybe I'd agree...

WAIT A SEC! What am I saying?

Yogi once said: an apple a day is half mental.

Casey once said: Can't anybody here eat an apple?

I rest my case.

The apple has overtones going back to the Bible.

Then, there is getting to first base, second base, third base, and hitting a home run, in the vernacular.

And in this case, from almost nothing our display becomes erect when a home run occurs. What is more, great cheering takes place, in public, no less.

Is that any message to send to our fans?

ok, nice and easy...

step away from the kool-aid!

hmm, so when a guy hits a home run .. a piece of forbidden fruit emerges from a top hat. i do not remember a top hat in the bible OR in the apocryphal stories. it isn't even in the koran. did harry houdini have his own religious text? the houdenian bible? king james would be so proud.

i think the only forbidden thing about it all is when they erected the apple, it seemed that the mets were forbidden to win.

here forth, new york shall be forever known as "the big cumquat" - thanx daisy.

LOL...WE MUST save the apple and make this stadium a MET Stadium. Great idea.

If your imagination is without limits, you can connotate a sexual meaning out of anything!! What do you think about Bloomie having his picture taken with any celebrity he comes across? Bet you can make that sexual!!!
5th-Aug-2007 01:23 pm (UTC)
i think they should put the magic apple outside the new amsterdam bar on 79th street on the west side .. and whenever a young co-ed hooks up with a columbia boy .. the apple should pop out.
5th-Aug-2007 02:17 pm (UTC) - Better place for magic apple
Put it near a senior center and when the apple pops out....a big WOWWWWWWW erupts. Might not happen again for years!!!
5th-Aug-2007 02:29 pm (UTC) - Re: Better place for magic apple
following certain logic in this thread ....

when a fan stands erect to cheer the team, it may have a sexual overtone.

so ban standing!

5th-Aug-2007 03:31 pm (UTC) - Uh...I'm all for nostalgia, but...
...the apple has seen better days.

The new stadium will have AN apple, it just won't be this beat-up relic from the 1980s (which is when the apple was put in place.)

I really don't have a problem with that. The papers today say the existing Shea apple WILL be preserved and put on the grounds of the new stadium as a display somewhere, but that the darn thing barely works anymore and the Mets believe it would never survive a move to the new stadium and still actually work.

I can believe that. The thing really looks awful these days. It's not like the apple has been there since Shea was built... it was installed in like 1983 or something. The notion of having a nod to the apple in the new stadium, a new apple, is fine with me. Why would we want a nice, new stadium displaying a run-down, dented, beat up, faded home run apple that doesn't even seem to work half the time anyway?
5th-Aug-2007 04:06 pm (UTC) - Re: Uh...I'm all for nostalgia, but...
go to the website for the petition.....thousands of people DO want it preserved.

In any event ....if they display it somewhere else it's fine with me, I don't think they committed to that though.

Also, I'd rather they say they just WON'T move it, rather than be told it can't be moved because it's too fragile. Somehow I don't buy that one!

THey should preserve it though. I'm sure the new yankees stadium will have some memoribilia from the old.

And I was reading that one of the other new stadiums (I forget which one) moved their fireworks display from the old to the new.

Fans have fond memories of stadiums and I think a few tips of the cap to the old shea stadium would be nice since it will soon be a parking lot.
5th-Aug-2007 07:02 pm (UTC) - Re: Uh...I'm all for nostalgia, but...
From today's Daily News...

Team officials said the old apple is too run down to survive a transfer to Citi Field in 2009.

They promise the relic will be put on display somewhere on the grounds of the new ballpark - but a brand new apple will take its place on the field.

"I appreciate the passion, but fans don't understand the reality that this particular apple is barely holding on and it wouldn't make any sense to use it in that manner," said Dave Howard, executive vice president of business operations for the Mets. "We will save it in an appropriate way."

And...LOOK at the Apple. Is it really hard to believe that the thing wouldn't handle a move very well?

I remember when the Apple was new...I was a kid at the time, but I remember it, it was this big thing when the Mets first unveiled it (at a time when there hadn't been a whole lot else to cheer about for a while.) I remember it during the heydey of the '80s Mets. And I look at it now. You can notice several things if you watch it today. For one, the apple itself is badly dented and is only barely apple-shaped anymore. For another, whereas it used to rise and fall smoothly when a home run was hit, it now seems to shudder and shake... sometimes it looks like it's not going to make it all the way up, or get stuck halfway down. It has clearly seen better days. Moving a fireworks display is one thing... fireworks either ignite or they don't. The apple barely works now, doesn't look very good, and I find it completely plausible that it'd be hard to move and keep in working condition.

If the new stadium wasn't going to HAVE an Apple, that'd be one thing. But would people be so upset if the Mets were not getting a new stadium at all, and the team replaced or rebuilt the existing apple so that it looked and worked better? Do you really think this wouldn't eventually be necessary? There will be an apple, they say, at Citi Field, and the old apple is going to be preserved on display at Citi Field, according to the article I've posted above.

Put a petition on the internet for just about anything and you can get a few hundred signitures. I think the Mets are doing the right thing here... preserve a piece of their history to display to future generations, but put something that looks and works better on the actual field of play in the new park.
5th-Aug-2007 07:31 pm (UTC) - Re: Uh...I'm all for nostalgia, but...

Lenny is badly dented and is only barely apple shaped anymore. And he seems to shudder and shake, and clearly has seen better days.

But do we put our beloved Lenny out to pasture???

Uh, nevermind!

5th-Aug-2007 08:56 pm (UTC) - Re: Uh...I'm all for nostalgia, but...
Dented and barely apple shaped, sure, and maybe even the part about shuddering and shaking, but
I'll bet Lenny still "makes it all the way up".

I was never a big fan of the apple. I'd much rather see Lenny come up out of that hat.

5th-Aug-2007 11:22 pm (UTC) - Re: Uh...I'm all for nostalgia, but...
.. and we've come full circle, back to lenny standing (cough) erect inside a big metal hat.

bill - remember when it used to bellow smoke before the apple emerged?
